This book is a real page turner. I could not put this book down. I rooted for Gus as he risked everything on his dangerous journey through rural Mississippi. Thanks to G.S. Willis for writing such an entertaining book.

‘GUS: Based on True Events’ is a powerful story that feels almost like a Huckleberry Finn novel. Its strong family center is what gives the book a powerful sense of emotion. You will find the book hard to put down as you go from one step of Gus’s journey to the next. The author does a great job of engaging the reader not only in the story but in the history of the time.
This short novel is well worth the read and will take most readers a few hours to read. Highly recommend if you are trying to get into powerful shorter stories.

This story is an easy read that brings up complex and deep racial issues that impact our society today. The author makes you feel like the mixed race young boy raised in the deep south at a time when racial injustice was common place. But understanding what that child went through makes you want to know more of his life. How did he meet his wife? What was it like for their children? Was life different in Michigan than in Mississippi? I hope the author continues writing about his family. Well done, G.S.

This book made me cry, made me smile, and made me cry while I was smiling. I appreciated the flow of the story and how it made me not want to put the book down because I just had to know what happened next. I eagerly await the next story by this author. He truly does have a gift that should be shared with others.

Gus had all the elements of a good lifetime movie. It captured an array of emotions; anger, hurt, fear, and most important joy as Gus emerges victorious! The author painted very vivid images of Gus and other characters in the book through his words. You felt Gus’s sadness, fear, and sheer wit and determination as he traveled through the Mississippi towns having to hide his true identity to stay alive. I cried tears of sadness through his pain and tears of joy through his victories!
Gus is a must read for young and old alike to get a glimpse of life in the old south for a young boy as he tries to find his way. My only regret is the story didn’t continue on as Gus grew into manhood. Great job G.S. Willis!
